Introduction to Scientific Writing (With The Hands-On Practice, Write Your Papers Confidently)

www.mikromediateknologi.com - Scientific writing is the skill to produce writing that will be published in scientific journals based on the results of evaluation, interpretation or review of literature, data or empirical evidence in order to reach other scientists, students, readers or viewers. Some types of scientific writing include Research Paper, Review Paper, Book Chapter, Conference Paper, Abstract, Poster, Thesis, Dissertation, etc. This course will focus on introducing students to scientific writing by focusing on students’ practicing to produce an abstract, background and literature review.

The learning activities in this course is designed by setting the outcomes, establishing evidences and adjusting each objective with the assessment. There are three types of activities designed: Absorb, Do and Connect. Absorb activities focus to make learners absorb knowledge/information through video presentation and text reading. The second type, that is do-activities aim at encouraging learners to do something with what they learn. These activities allow learners to practice a procedure or answer a question. In essence, learners practice, explore and discover within their learning. The last type is the connect activities that connect what learners have learnt in their previous learning, to their future professional needs.

These three activities are shown as a sequential cycle that can start with an absorb activity. However, it can also start with other activities. Each activity can have several practices. Students get three attempts and have multiple time of absorbing information from the provided sources. Assignments can be completed as individual, in pair or in a group. Students can ask questions or discuss problems in the forum or in an interactive session. A private chat can always be sent through chat messaging application or email for one-on-one consultation.

The course objectives are aligned to Common European Framework Reference to provide transparent and comprehensive description of students’ achievement. The materials are taken from the authentic scientific articles and presented both in English and Bahasa Indonesia to appreciate students plurilingual competencies. At the end of this course, an individual student is expected to produce a draft of undergraduate thesis.
